Communicate Green

Sunday, 10/17/2010, 15:10:42

The project Communicate Green is going to start in the beginning of next year. Besides working on it, I am also responsible for managing and leading our part of the project.

The main objective of the project is the development of an adaptive, context-aware and technology-comprehensive power management for modern radio networks, with which a considerable amount of energy can be saved by maintaining the high quality of experience at the same time. There are a lot of contextual information present in mobile network components and end devices, which can help to calculate decisions for a dynamic de- and reactivating of network components (e.g., base stations). Our part in the project focuses on the development of a context entity that aggregates and processes various types of contextual information, and the integration of it into the mobile network architecture.

For this project, we are looking for a highly qualified research scientist. Here, you can find job openings! Good luck!

Paper Presentations

Tuesday, 10/05/2010, 13:59:48

In the last two weeks, I had to present the work of my papers on different workshops.

The first event took place on the September 23, 2010 at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, the 7th KuVS Expert Talk on Location-based Applications and Services. Here, I talked about location-based recommendations for the Location-based Service ShoppingMate.

HetRec 2010 WorkshopOn September 26, I was in Barcelona on the HetRec 2010 workshop, which was organized in conjunction with the ACM RecSys 2010 conference. This workshop focused on information heterogeneity and fusion in recommender systems. My presentation dealt with the integration of expert domain knowledge in the recommendation process in order to increase the quality of recommendations. RecSys 2010 was very interesting and exciting, because all researchers that are doing research in recommender systems were there.

Abdulbaki presenting at HetRecOn the SPIRIT 2010 workshop in Leipzig, I talked about the exploitation of ontologies for better recommendations. I extended this approach by a semantic multidimensional approach at the ABIS 2010 workshop in Kassel in order to create contextual and semantic recommendations for different applications. The demonstration of my work was done using a food purchase scenario.

All in all, I can say that the feedback I got from the workshops was very good and helpful, because now I got a lot of ideas and contacts with which I can continue my research on these topics.

IT2Green and Publications

Sunday, 08/22/2010, 18:56:54

IT2GreenIn the beginning of this year, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) started a funding programme called IT2Green, in which the best project proposals about energy-efficient usage of ICT were selected and will be funded in the next years. In cooperation with a consortium, we submitted a project proposal a few months ago, which was selected for funding! The project will start in January or February 2011.
Due to the fact that I am part of the project, I am going to focus on Green Computing and try to establish this research area at our department.

Furthermore, I worked on four papers, which got accepted by the several workshop program committees. Here is the list of the workshops, I am going to attend to:

Here, you can have a look at the publications.
